Description

The parish church of St. John the Baptist is inside Manigi, village at the margins of the plateau and at the foot of the low mountains splitting the area of Cascia from the southern part of the plain of Saint Scholastica,  connected by trails.

The village was mentioned in the “Regesto” as a place given to the Abbey of Farfa in 1077. In ancient maps, it is annotated with the name of “Mavisio, Mivisio, Magnisio, Manisio”.

The church, erected in 1460, has a single nave covered by vaults. The sacristy, maybe the ancient oratory, preserves the whole fresco decoration (1482). On the back wall in a second register, is the Crucifixion between Our Lady of Sorrows and St. John the Evangelist (1482) and farther St. Catherine of Alexandria and Helena with a recovered Cross.

The upper part is seriously damaged because of the collapse of the ceiling, now restored. In the lower section, including all three walls, runs a fake arcade with trefoil arches resting on slender columns. On the arches are painted 14 images of Saints, whose names are written in Gothic letters in the lower band. On the left side is Saint Simon, Saint Matthias, Saint Thomas, Saint Bartholomew, Saint James and Saint Andrew. On the back wall, are painted Saint Paul, Saint John the Baptist, Saint Peter and Saint John the Evangelist on either side of Our Lady Enthroned with Child. On the right wall, the series is broken by a splayed lancet window, where, on the inner surface, is painted the Trigram of Christ, while on side walls, Saint Benedict and Saint Scholastic (proving the Benedictine origin of the ancient oratory).

On the continuing small porch are the images of Saint Matthew, Saint James Minor and Saint Philip; Our Lady frowned observing the scene from her sharp throne still Gothic, like the other saints. The study of stylistic details reveal a local (from Norcia) painter  influenced by both Nicola da Siena and the style of the neighboring Region of Marche. It is the work of the first generation of Sparapane, who filled the walls of the Churches of Norcia and Campi area in those years (it is a  kind of art still closely tied to the Gothic style, without receiving any influence by the movement prevailing in the rest of Umbria). The painter, anonymous, should be Antonio di Giovanni Sparapane from Norcia.

Manigi also had  a thirteenth century processional cross, in gilded copper sheets, embossed on wooden frame with small decorations. The Crucifix has still Byzantine features, as the open eyes (Christ triumphing over the death), the prominent ribs and the feet of Christ unnaturally overlapped by profile, show . At the top is an Angel praying, by sides Our Lady of the Sorrows and Saint John, at the bottom the skull on Mount Calvary. On the back side, Saint Nicholas from Bari is embossed in the center and in the panels the apocalyptic symbols of the Evangelists in the original layout: at the top the eagle, on sides the lion and the bull, at the bottom the angel. Lascaris reminds 5 altars: of Saint John, of the Rosary, of Saint Rocco, of Saint Charles and of the Confraternity of the Sacrament.
